New year

Yes, there is a new year more. This year i expect many things like many people. My first aim is to pass my all lectures to be more relax. Also, i expect Fenerbahçe to be champion in this season, i think that it is my biggest expectation:D.Also new year and new lessons, one of them is Eng 102, i hope i will be successful in that course,if i pass the Eng 101. Happy new year...

My course evaulation

I think that this semester was good for me in Eng 101 class with Sonja. Our class was also have good ambiance because my friends were good, we were few people in class. I think that when there is few people in lecture, it is easy to understand and contribute to lecture. We developed ourselves for example, we did presentations, we wrote academic essays and blogs.Thank you Sonja for everything:D

Our in-class exam

Those weeks i have got many final exams and English 101 was one of them. I read all the texts which Sonja sent us.In my opinion, my exam was good, i hope that i will take high mark. I think that i prepared well for the exam.I chose the second question which i wrote an essay about it on blog, it provided me an advantage because in exam i know what will i write.

Marked Women

I realized that i forget to write blog about Marked Women. I want to write about important and interesting points which i found about Marked Women. I want to focus on marked and unmarked terms, the writer emphasises that women must be marked according to our society, i agree with this idea. Women has no chance to be unmarked because women can not be standart for example, there is no standart hair style or make-up style for women but men have oppurtinity to be un- marked and marked both.Men can wear standart clothes and there is closed hair styles for men, also men can wear different and marked clothes for example, wrtiter says that men can wear sexy t-shirts or sandals and boots. In addition, taking husband's surname is interesting thing that i find for women. Women take their husbands surname after they are married and it means that women tells all over the world that i am married, if a woman reject her husband to take his surname, it is too marked according to Deborah Tannen.

Boys Don't Cry

Today, one of the presentation group present it in the lecture, i really like the presentation. I watched the film and i also like the film. I want to mention that there is many films about he who feels like she but i never see a film that she feels like a he, i find it interesting because of it. In the film, there is a women who act like a man, she is drinking, fighting, hanging on with men.She has identity crisis, she feels like her opposite sex and she interested in women. Also, in the film, there are many scenes which describes the masculinity.

Tough Guise

I watched Tough Guise before but i forget to write blog about Tough Guise and i watched it again for the in-class exam. It was an interesting video about masculinity. This video shows us all the differences between men and women in media. I want to mention to Katz's idea, he says that masculinity is a pose,a performance, learned in our society and culture. I absuletly agree with this idea because noone born with masculinity, men are learning dominance of masculinity from their culture or society. There is a pressure on men to be strong, dominant and agressive in many society. In addition, in the video, there is some suggestions; men should have the courage to work with women and girls and women should show value to men who reject the tough guise. I find them interesting and i wanted to share with you.

Essay for İn-Class Exam

-Discuss how media shows women and men, support your ideas with Killing Us Softly and Tough Guise.

Media is biased about genders because they show men dominant and strong on the other hand, women are shown passive and a sexual object or a product by the media. In many TV programmes, advertisements or in newspapers, you can see men' s dominance. Masculinity is in many cultures, i mean that sometimes parents teach their boys to be violent or dominant and people do not find strange the media's attitude about gender differences.Masculinity is a pose, a performance, learned in our society and culture. For example in Tough Guise,Katz mention that media says that "kids killing kids" not that it is boys killing boys or girls but when a woman is violent, it is almost always an important part of the story. In addition, on televisions or films women is usually shown as desperate and men is shown as hero and dominant. Last 50 years, we can see the difference on men's image and masculinity, men became more aggressive and physically strong. There are few examples of image of men like, bisceps increasing double or triple in 50 years, the guns became more bigger and technological and more aggressive acts is shown.
Women are shown as sexual object and passive by media. In advertisements or in TV channels men are aggressive and active but girls are passive and less powerful . For example, in Killing Us Softly, the speaker mentions that in televisions, boys are taller and the boys looking down to see girls, it is about power. Also, girls are seen as a product in advertisements, only the women's body and beauty are important their bodyies is used on products. For example,in advertisements, advertisers focus on woman's part of body like their breasts. In our culture, men's body never critised or judged like women. The Media tells that women should not be too poweful, they should be silent and passive according to Killing Us Softly.
